A new twist on recycling

June 18th, 2009

Today, we connected with a local woman that has pigs (she is also the director of the Lincoln Street Arts Center.)  Rather than composting our food scraps, she has provided us with a container to put our food scraps in.  We just have to put it out daily and she will swap it out for a clean bucket.  She will then give the scraps to her pigs.  This is a brilliant idea.  Honestly, we just don’t have the time to compost and rather than all the scaps ending up in the dump, they will be put to good use.  It’s a win win situation and a very interesting twist on recycling.

Summer Solstice Festival in Rockland on June 20th

June 17th, 2009
Frank at the balloon drop

Frank at the balloon drop

This Saturday marks the Summer Sostice Festival here in Rockland.  The day kicks off with a book plant & bake sale on the lawn of the Rockland Public Library from 2 – 5 pm.  Main Street will then be closed from 5 – 9 pm.  There will be all different kinds of festivities on Main Street including a rock climbing wall and a monkey jump!  Food vendors will be serving eveything from funnel cakes to sausage and peppers and several live music acts will be spread throughout the area.  The highlight of the event will be a whoopie pie eating contest in front of the Rockland Cafe.  This is not to be missed as different age groups compete to see who can stuff their faces with the most whoopie pies.  It is absolutely hysterical!!  Last year drew in excess of 5000 people.  Youthlinks will also have a balloon dropping fundraiser.  Last year, Frank has the pleasure of being one of the volunteers to get soaked.  This picture is from just before he got hit!!  It’s gonna be a really fun day and is one of the many reasons Rockland rocks!!

This Place Matters!

June 15th, 2009

That’s the mantra of Main Street!  In Rockland, it’s our beautiful and artfully restored Strand Theater.  This photo was taken on Friday, June 5th at the closing of the Maine Downtown Center Annual Conference.  Do you recognize that handsome fella down in front?

Our downtown matters!  Rockland’s downtown is vibrant and alive.  Anchored by the Farnsworth Museum and The Strand, Main Street is home to award winning restaurants and chefs, a useful variety of local shops; and an enjoyable array of galleries from reclaimed to fine art.

If you have not been to Rockland, it’s worth the trip.  If you haven’t been recently, it’s worth the trip back.  From rotating exhibits in the museum and galleries to the every changing storefront windows, there’s always something new to discover.

From Boston, we’re just 30 minutes North by Cape Air at Logan Airport.  Round trip tickets can be purchased for as little as $150.  Train enthusiasts can take a two-hour excursion from Brunswick and enjoy one of the most scenic rail trails in North America.  Of course, nothing could be finer than sailing up the Maine coast into beautiful Penobscot Bay and being greeted in Rockland Harbor by the Breakwater Lighthouse.

Robert Indiana’s “EAT” sculpture installed at the Farnsworth

June 15th, 2009

June 18th will be the start of the Maine in America celebration in Rockland & Rockport Maine.  This ten day festival celebrates Maine’s role in American art.  As part of the festivities here in Rockland the Farnsworth Art Museum & Wyeth Center has just installed a scultpture by artist Robert Indiana entitled “EAT.”  This sculpture was created for the 1964 Worlds Fair.  An interesting tidbit was the the sculpture only stayed up for one week as people lined up by the dozens thinking the sculpture would lead them to food!!  Please click here for all the details during this ten day extravaganza.  It will be a very exciting time to be in Midcoast Maine!!  I will post photos once the sculpture is fully installed and lit up in all its glory!3607207032_d25346aecd

Rockland’s Windjammers

June 15th, 2009

In yesterday’s post, I spoke of the new schooner marina at Lermond’s Cove but failed to mention the three schooners docked there.  They are the The J&E Riggin, The Stephen Taber & The Schooner Nathaniel Bowditch.  Of course, Rockland does have the largest fleet of historic Windjammers in the country.  You can check out the rest of them here

New Schooner Marina in Rockland’s Lermond Cove

June 14th, 2009

Since yesterday was so incredubly beautiful out, I decided to take the camera and walk down to Rockland’s new schooner marina at Lermond Cove.  Currently, three historic windjammers dock there.  These vessles offer a unique sailing experience in Penobscot Bay. From the Maine Windjammer

Maine Windjammers

Maine Windjammers

 website:

“Maine and the windjammer fleet go hand in hand.  Nowhere else in North America will you find such a large, historic fleet of traditional sailing vessels. Thousands of wild and pristine islands dot the Maine coast, providing unlimited anchorages for the windjammers.  Wildlife abounds, with bald eagles, porpoises and seals sighted on every cruise. In the fleet’s home waters of Penobscot Bay, there are hundreds of anchorages just waiting to be explored. If you’re looking to get off the beaten path, to explore where the big ships can’t go, a Maine windjammer can get you there.”

Why Rockland Rocks!

June 14th, 2009

Cafe MirandaSo last night, we got lucky (in many ways).  I just realized how that sounds, so get your mind out of the gutter.  What I mean to say is that our check-ins arrived early; we had a full house; and we were able to sneak downtown for dinner out on a Saturday night.

We walked into Cafe Miranda to see Denise and Tom Perkins (former owners of LimeRock Inn) and longtime Penobscot Bay sailing enthusiasts.  Kerry had the night off, but had stopped in for a minute, so we got to visit with him too.  We sat outside under the canvas with the warmth of the fire.  It was turning out to be a great night.

Kerry and his friend, Chris, joined us for a drink, then headed on their way.  Karla, as always, took special care of us.  And we struck up a conversation with the couple, Bob and Karen, sitting at the next table.  Turns out they are vacationing on the midcoast from suburban Philly.  Although their first time in the area, Karen had done a tremendous amount of research.  So, they sounded like oldtimers.

Our entrees came; their appetizers, then entrees came; and the conversation just moved freely from topic to topic.  It was just one of those relaxing, outdoor dinners that make Cafe Miranda special.  Bob and Karen are great people and the evening reminded us why we left New Jersey for a truly better life in Maine.  It was a night filled with old friends and “new” old friends.  One of many in this special place called Rockland.
