July 14th, 2009
Painting a Blue Streak by Eric Hopkins

Painting a Blue Streak by Eric Hopkins

As you may know, wednesday nights during the summer in Rockland are gallery nights. Rockland has about 20 galleries which extend their hours until 8pm on Wednesdays. Tomorrow, July 15th, is a special gallery night where many will have exhibit openings. On these nights, most galleries serve wine, cheeses and assorted delicacies. One of the most interesting collaborations tomorrow night is between the Eric Hopkins Gallery and Cafe Miranda.

Food from local favorite, Cafe Miranda will be served at the Eric Hopkins Gallery and artwork from Eric Hopkins will be displayed at Cafe Miranda.

Why not make an evening of it. A night at the LimeRock Inn is the perfect way to end your evening of eating and taking in the art. We are just steps away from all downtown Rockland has to offer.

Lobster & Crab classes at Ship to Shore in Owls Head Maine

July 6th, 2009

Here’s something unique.  I wrote the other day about Ship to Shore in Owls Head.  They sell lobsters right off the dock at very good prices.  They can even cook them for you right there to enjoy on the dock overlooking the harbor.  They’ve just added a new twist to their offerings.  They will be holding lobster and crab classes.  It’s an opportunity for land lovers to learng how to get the most from their lobster and crabs.  Hour long courses will be held right on the docks where local lobsterman will show you how to properly pick a lobster or a crab.  Sounds like a really fun afternoon!  lobster

The lobster class includes on 1.25 pound cooked lobster, instructions, all the tools needed to crack him open, good sense of humor and beautiful view of Owls Head harbor.  Classes will take place at 3pm on Sunday July 5, 12, 19 & 26.  The cost is $20 per person and of course you get take to take home the lobster meat or eat it right there!

The crab class is similar except you get two cooked crabs for $15.  Theses classes will take place at 1pm on Sunday July 12, 19 & 26.

Ship to Shore, Owls Head, Maine

July 2nd, 2009

There’s a new place in Owl’s Head on the waterfront to buy lobsters!  Ship to Shore wharf has beShip to Shore Wharf, Owls Head, Maineen opened by Rodney and Anna Mason.  They have refurbished the lobster shack with a gift shop and they also sell lobsters and snacks.  If you are so inclined, they will even cook the lobsters for you right there to enjoy along with chips and soft drinks right on the dock.  Owl’s Head harbor, where Ship to Shore wharf is located is a magnificent spot.  It’s the picture postcard perfect vision of what you imagine a fishing harbor to look like.  The docks are lined with colorful lobster traps and buoys.  If you’re making your way out to Owl’s Head Lighthouse, this is a great place to stop, grab some lobster and soak in the local views.  For the photographer, it’s also a great place to capture the Maine coast!  Please click here to view some photos I took.

Throwdown With Bobby Flay in Rockland Maine, AGAIN!!

June 25th, 2009

We received an invite several days ago from Lynn Archer who owns the Brass Compass Cafe.  She said that the Food Network was coming to town to film her cooking her famous King of Clubs Lobsters Club Sandwich.  Something about the whole thing seemed fishy to us.  You see, two years ago, Rockland was in a very similar situation when the food network came to film the pie moms.  As it turned our, it was all a sham and it was actually a throwndown with Bobby Flay.  We were very excited to be part of that show.  So this morning, Frank and I went down to Buoy Park in Rockland for the filming of this show and low and behold who showed up but Mr. Bobby Flay.  He challenged Lynne to a throwndown!  Unfortunately, we were not able to stick around for the results as our duties at the inn required us to return.  This is wonderful news for Lynn and the folks at Brass Compass Cafe and Rockland.  If you’ve not had the chance to eat at her place, it is a must stop for lunch.  Everything on the menu is made fresh daily.  You can check out their menu hereHistoric Inns of Rockland Bobby Flay.  This photo is from the throwdown from two years ago.  It is of Bobby Flay and all the innkeepeers.

Press Tour this week

June 22nd, 2009

Each year, the Hisscan0001toric Inns of Rockland host a press tour for national media.  We have a great lineup of writers coming on the tour this year.  They will get to experience some of the best things in Rockland including our museums, restaurants and outdoor activities.  Three years ago, our press tour was capped off with a lobster bake in the back garden of the Captain Lindsey House.  A food editor from Woman’s Day magazine took this very funny picture of me.  I don’t normally don this type of getup when eating lobster but for some reason the mood struck me this particular evening.  We all look forward to another successful tour!

A new twist on recycling

June 18th, 2009

Today, we connected with a local woman that has pigs (she is also the director of the Lincoln Street Arts Center.)  Rather than composting our food scraps, she has provided us with a container to put our food scraps in.  We just have to put it out daily and she will swap it out for a clean bucket.  She will then give the scraps to her pigs.  This is a brilliant idea.  Honestly, we just don’t have the time to compost and rather than all the scaps ending up in the dump, they will be put to good use.  It’s a win win situation and a very interesting twist on recycling.
