As innkeepers, it is very difficult for us to leave the inn before noon as we are busy finishing up breakfast, cleaning rooms and assisting our guests. The Rockland Farmer’s Market takes place every Thursday through the summer down at Harbor Park and sadly to say, today was our first opportunity to experience this gem in our town!

There are 20 some odd purveryors which include many local farms. You can find everything from meats to cheeses, to jams, loads of fresh veggies, even soaps and ice cream.

For us, this trip also included lunch at the Uproot Pie Company which is a mobile wood fired brick over pizza outfit. Our personal pizzas were to die for!!

We picked up a bunch of verggies for dinner tonight. Can’t wait to try them out.

If your in town on a Thursday morning, this is a must see stop. you won’t regret it!! Of course the location ain’t too shabby either!!!

Yesterday, I grabbed my camera and headed down to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay. If you’ve never been, it is definitely worth a visit and makes a wonderful daytrip from the inn. The gardens are comprised of 128 acres with 3,600 feet of tidal shore frontage in Boothbay. They opened their doors in 2007 although planning, plantings and building had begun 16 years earlier!

The gardens are comprised of several different sections with the two newest being The Garden of the Five Senses (above) and The Children’s Garden. The entire property is really quite magnificent.

My goal this year was to get to the gardens to see the rhododendrons in bloom. While I was a bit late in the season, there were still many varieties in bloom.

Today, we hopped in an Escalade Stretch Limo courtesy of All About Trolley and took a ten minute drive over to Owls Head along with some other innkeepers for a tour of Breakwater Vineyards. This coming summer will be their second season in operation.

We got a tour of their winemaking process where they were currently working on a Blueberry wine and a Chardonnay.

The vineyard is located on a former horse farm on a hilltop in Owls Head with absolutely stunning views of Penobscot Bay and the Camden Hills.

The main house contains the tasting room where we sampled a Reisling, an Oak Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir. Now, I don’t normally care for Riesling as I find it too sweet but this was absolutely delicious. It was not too sweet and had a slightly crisp and tart finish.

The tasting room is stunning and has a small shop with Breakwater Lighthouse gift items with proceeds going to the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Light. They also sell their wine of course and branded gift items.

Breakwater Vineyards offers free tasting every Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 5 pm in season. If your in the area, this is not to be missed!

Thanks again to All Aboard Trolley for transportation. The stretch Escalade, complete with 4 TVs, ambient lighting, fireplace, laser lights, fog machine and every imaginable bell and whistle made us feel like movie stars!!!

Here’s something unique. I wrote the other day about Ship to Shore in Owls Head. They sell lobsters right off the dock at very good prices. They can even cook them for you right there to enjoy on the dock overlooking the harbor. They’ve just added a new twist to their offerings. They will be holding lobster and crab classes. It’s an opportunity for land lovers to learng how to get the most from their lobster and crabs. Hour long courses will be held right on the docks where local lobsterman will show you how to properly pick a lobster or a crab. Sounds like a really fun afternoon!

The lobster class includes on 1.25 pound cooked lobster, instructions, all the tools needed to crack him open, good sense of humor and beautiful view of Owls Head harbor. Classes will take place at 3pm on Sunday July 5, 12, 19 & 26. The cost is $20 per person and of course you get take to take home the lobster meat or eat it right there!

The crab class is similar except you get two cooked crabs for $15. Theses classes will take place at 1pm on Sunday July 12, 19 & 26.

Please call 207-594-4606 to reserve a seat on one of theses days. In fact, why not make a weekend of it with a stay at LimeRock Inn. Rooms are still available. Rockland and the surrounding area has so much to offer!!
